Along the way, you’ll witness the giant kites of Sumpango, encounter living Maya traditions around Lake Atitlán, and take part in hands-on culinary experiences rooted in community. Itinerary in Detail
Days 1-4
Sacatepéquez
Colonial Gateway and Flight of the Barriletes
Antigua Guatemala, Ciudad Vieja, Sumpango
Settle into Antigua with a welcome dinner and five-course tasting menu, then dive into the city through a guided walking experience that includes rooftop views at Iglesia de la Merced, the Santa Catalina Arch, artisan markets, and a lively street food tour with tuk-tuk transportation and ten tastings. The following day takes you onto the slopes of Volcán de Agua for a coffee cupping session and a 4x4 farm tour, followed by time to explore Antigua and an evening bonfire gathering. The experience culminates in Sumpango during All Saints’ Day, where you’ll join a private kite-making workshop, visit the cemetery traditions that honor loved ones, and witness the breathtaking Giant Kite Festival with fiambre and festival celebrations.
Days 5-7
Lake Atitlán, Sololá
Artisan Traditions and Living Maya Culture
San Juan La Laguna, Santiago Atitlán, San Pedro La Laguna
Journey to Lake Atitlán and immerse yourself in the artistry and spiritual depth of its Maya communities. In San Juan La Laguna, you’ll share a home-cooked meal with a local artisan, learn the ancient practice of natural dyeing, and create your own scarf in a backstrap weaving workshop. Before dawn the next day, hike to Rostro Maya for sunrise over the lake, then cross Atitlán by private boat to Santiago Atitlán for market visits, artisan encounters, and a visit to the shrine of Maximón, before returning to San Juan for cacao, honey, and cultural traditions. Your time at the lake concludes in San Pedro with a market visit, a private Maya cooking class in chef Anita’s home, and a Nahual spiritual painting workshop guided by Maya Tz’utujil knowledge.
Days 8-9
Tecpan & Guatemala City
Kingdoms of the Past and a Meaningful Farewell
San Juan La Laguna, Iximché, Guatemala City
Leave Lake Atitlán behind and travel toward Guatemala City with a meaningful stop in Tecpán to explore Iximché, the former capital of the Kaqchikel Maya kingdom. There, a guided archaeological tour and a traditional Maya fire ceremony led by a local Ajq’ij create a powerful moment of reflection before the journey’s close. Back in Guatemala City, the trip winds down with time to rest, reflect, and gather for a farewell chef’s tasting dinner before your airport transfer the following morning.
